Event Description

UR students will present to our community their
Study of businesses at Brooks Landing.

The event will feature free refreshments from Brooks Landing businesses, including mini Jamaican patties and cool Jamaican punch from D&L Groceries and, from the Wok, crispy vegetable spring rolls, chicken gyoza, and vegetable rice noodle.

The presentation includes two student projects: one podcast and one short documentary. Both feature students’ interviews with Wayne Luong of the Wok and Dolores & Linford Hamilton of D&L Groceries.

Also incorporated in the projects are additional professional perspectives shared by Maria Furgiuele director of the Community Design Center of Rochester on how intentional, people-centered urban design helps build community, leading to dynamic, creative, multiple and layered use of space that aligns well with the input and vision of the community members.

The podcast and documentary are created primarily to heighten UR students’ awareness of and appreciation for southwest Rochester just across the Genesee River from the main campus. Hopefully, the projects can also inspire conversations among the local residents about the many mindful, community-engaged efforts in this area and its evolving relationship with the university.

The student projects are the product of Stella Wang, UR Associate Professor of the Writing, Speaking, and Argument Program. Her students learned a process called Community-Engaged Transcreation. You have to attend to find out what that means! Many will recognize Professor Wang as she has visited many Southwest community meetings and events over the past 6 months.
